Rail Systems Solutions (RSS), Inc. was selected to participate as an integral part of the design/build team that was selected to design, furnish, and install two system extensions in Salt Lake City, Utah. The $23M project is known as the Mid-Jordan/Draper Light Rail Transit Project. RSS will perform this work as Rocky Mountain Signal Services (RMSS), a Rail Systems Solutions and MJG, Inc. joint venture. RMSS will design, furnish, install, and place into service the Train Control System and Highway Crossing Warning Systems for the extensions.

The Mid-Jordan extension is a 10.6-mile, double-track, light rail transit line with 10 new stations, 10 new interlockings and 15 highway crossings between the existing TRAX system and the terminal of the new line in the new Daybreak development. The project consists of 1.2 miles of at-grade street running track and 9.5 miles of at-grade ballasted track. The project is being integrated with the existing double-track, light rail transit line at Lovendahl/Sugar interlockings.

The Draper extension consists of a four-mile extension with a single ballasted interlocking at the end of the line. There are eleven crossings and three new stations on this extension. The Draper extension will tie into the existing 10000 South TRAX station and ends near City Hall in Draper.

The maximum operating speed on the line is designed for 65 mph normal running for the light rail vehicles and 35 mph for freight and maintenance-of-way operations. Reverse running is designed for a maximum speed of 35 mph for all vehicles.

The Mid-Jordon/Draper Project, currently in the installation stage, will be constructed while maintaining freight service on the existing right-of-way and is scheduled for completion in 2011.
